Painted after a ceramic vase once owned by famed gardener Vita Sackaville-West, this piece uses motifs from Dutch golden age floral and still life pieces. Such pieces often employed a curtain and imported wares, to showcase abundance, but tempered it all by the suggestion—seen in a fallen flower petal here, that life is fleeting.
